Between Clovelly and Bronte

Looking towards Bronte Beach on the cliff walk, north of Clovelly.

Later: I have to come clean! Because of my recent holiday I have a shortage of new photos of Sydney, and while yesterday's jacarandas were taken yesterday, this photo was actually taken in July. Thus this is a mid-winter photo, not summer. And yes, Sydney often looks like this in winter. Sad to live in such a wintry place, eh! (Clues: the long sleeves on the man, and the few people on the beach. It was probably a warmish 22 degrees on land, but only about 17 or 18 in the water - that's celcius of course...)

Pilates in the park, Terrigal

A little while ago I showed a picture of someone being put through their paces by a personal trainer in Hyde Park. Here's group exercises in public open space.
Early morning "boot camps" have caused some controversy as they stomp past people's bedroom windows before dawn, with the instructor barking instructions, or as some see it, despoiling the amenity of public parks or beaches where people want to walk, swim, or exercise their dogs withour intrusive music or loud orders. I can't see mothers with strollers doing Pilates invoking the same reaction!

Sitting Pretty: Angel With A View

This Angel in Waverly Cemetery (between Bronte and Clovelly beaches) is sitting pretty enjoying one of the best views in Sydney, and I'd hazard a guess, one of the best views from a cemetery anywhere in the world.

For some more pics (including a fallen angel and angels who have turned their backs on the view) see here.

You can still get buried here, but plots are scarce, and it doesn't come cheap. Probably better to enjoy it while you're alive, and happily the Bondi to Coogee (and beyond) coastal walk takes you right past here (the path is defined by the white fence and orange stuff).

Now have a look at these theme interpretations from around the world. Time zones mean different places come on line at different times.

Golfers, The Coast Golf Course, Little Bay

To gain access to Little Bay, where I took yesterday's photo, I walked across The Coast Golf Course. The cliffs along here host a series of golf courses, all with spectacular views. There is a public access walk along those cliffs. This was taken about 4:15 pm as late afternoon winter shadows fell and the sky paled.

Wrapped Coast - by Christo and Jeanne-Claude 1969

In October 1969, New York artist Christo arrived in Sydney to wrap Little Bay (about 10 kilometres south of Bondi). The project attracted a lot of comment, much of it critical and mocking . His team of workers included art students and rock climbers. A group of thugs arrived and ridiculed the workers, and a scuffle broke out. Opinions varied from that of the Sydney Morning Herald’s JAC Dunn who said “The more you look at the rippling acres of polyweave enveloping the rocks….the more you get the Christmas feeling: ‘What’s underneath?” to the tabloid Daily Telegraph which asked “Who called the fire brigade?”
(From James Cockington, History Happened Here : strange but true stories from Australian suburbia.)

Having moved to Sydney the year before, but only being 11 years old, I have a vague memory of all this occurring, and would love to have seen it, but alas I didn't . . . all I can remembr are some black and white TV news images.

Christo's other projects included wrapping The Reichstag in 1995, and the Pont Neuf in 1985.
